17 Mar How do wearable devices improve our life and well-being?
My case study
I received my first fitness tracker device — an Apple Watch as a Christmas present in December 2020. It turned out to be my favourite gadget and I wear it all the time unless I need to charge it over night.
First off, I love the convenicence of Apple’s ecosystem: I can interact directly with essential apps and services that I use on a daily basis such as incoming calls, SMS, Whatsapp, Skype through my AppleWatch. Thus I don’t need to hold or have my phone next to me all the time. That’s great!
My favourite features of Apple Watch are the track of health data and health notifications. Some notifications popping up during the day such as Standup reminder, Mindfulness for breathing that remind me to take care of myself.
Office workers as me typically sit too much and prolonged sitting is a dangerous and significant factor that causes a high risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, depression, obesity, as well as muscle and joint problems.
That why take 1 minute to stand up and move every hour will help everyone to lower genuinely these health risks.
Apple Watch is just an example among a large variety of wearable devices (FitBit, Samsung, Garmin, Xiaomi, etc.). And any activity tracker will make people healthier.
The benefits of fitness tracker devices
To improve our health and well-being, it’s vital to work out and exercise regularly. Regular exercise and physical activity will help us to lose weight, get in shape, improve mental health and mood, sleep, concentration, efficiency and life expectancy.
Now the main question is: “How often do you exercise in a day or a week?”
The answer is according to CDC, 60–85% of adults (18–64 years old) have sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity. That means a lifestyle with a lot of sitting and very little to no exercise. That’s a very interesting information right?
Fitness trackers are a popular and useful way to keep track of your daily progress and keep you active. Worldwide shipments of wearable devices (smart watches, sport watches, fitness trackers and healthcare wristbands) reached 533.6 million in 2021 with a compound annual growth rate of 27.2% according to IDC data (https://www.idc.com/tracker/).
